The economic area of Lusatia is characterized by traditional and innovative industries such as power and environmental engineering, the chemical industry, plastics engineering, the food and luxury food industry, engine construction and metal trade. The third largest power producer in Germany, Vattenfall Europe AG, is also located in Lusatia. With its latest lignite power plants and worldwide pilot power plant with poor CO2 emissions Vattenfall has an important share in the development and establishment of an image as the power region of Lusatia. The production of renewable energy is becoming more and more important and the regional research establishments are actively cooperating in these different processes.
Engine construction and metal trade – all from one region
Many companies from Lusatia work in the branches special equipment construction, tool manufacture as well as in the fixture and plant construction and metal structures, such as rail vehicles, agricultural engines and systems for automotive engineering. The product range covers assemblies and components for the inside of vehicle interior to compressors for air-conditioning and parts for gear boxes. The railway engineering in Lusatia with the locations in Bautzen, Goerlitz and Niesky is the European competence center for ultra-modern street and city railways, double stack wagons as well as for wagons for special cargos.

Lusatia is one of the oldest and latest textile regions in Europe and has an impressive variety. Different companies produce for example clothes, home textile products and technical textile products. Located in the middle of the Europe-Textile-Region, which includes the traditional core regions of the textile and clothing industry in Brandenburg and Saxony as well as in Poland and the Czech Republic, the long-lasting tradition of the textile industry has developed to one of the most important economic branches in Lusatia.
Food and luxury food industry – delights from Lusatia
Many traditional craft producers and modern industrial companies form the food and luxury food industry in Lusatia which is well-known beyond the regional borders. Traditional products are Pulsnitzer gingerbreads, Lusatian carps, Lusatian horseradish and Lusatian linseed oil. Many other regional products like mustard from Bautzen, products from “Kunella“, brandy from Wilthen, chocolate from “Felicitas“, zwieback from Neukirch, mineral water from Bad Liebenwerda or the “Oppacher Mineralquellen”, Lusatian juices and different products of regional breweries are sold across Germany and exported abroad.
The glass industry – an industrial branch with a long tradition
The glass industry formed the industrial development in the region for more than 100 years. In the twenties and thirties of the 20th century the Lusatian glass industry dominant worldwide. Until 1990 it supplied the domestic market with glass for industry and for illuminating as well as with lead glass. Now nearly all the regional companies and their most important suppliers and service companies are organized in the association “Lausitzer Glasring e.V.”.

Not only are the traditional industries very successful in Lusatia but also future-oriented, innovative products and technologies are developed with support by the research at the Brandenburg Technical University, by the International University Institute Zittau, the University Zittau-Goerlitz, the University of Applied Sciences, Lausitz, the Technical University of Applied Sciences Wildau, the Financial College Koenigs Wusterhausen, the Saxon Police Academy in Rothenburg, the University of Cooperative Education Bautzen as well as other research institutes helping to produce new products and technologies which are used in Lusatia and around the whole world.
